From Early Foundations to International Leadership

For Dr. Mari Simpson, the path into education leadership began long before she entered senior roles.

Growing up in a small-town environment and influenced by a mother who was a teacher, she developed an early appreciation for the role education plays in shaping lives. These early influences instilled values of discipline, service, and purpose, principles that would later underpin a career spanning more than two decades across Asia and the Middle East.

Over the years, Dr. Simpson has taken on leadership roles focused on school improvement, organisational transformation, and system-wide development within international Kโ€“12 education. Today, she is recognised as an education executive, inspector, author, and consultant, working with institutions to strengthen people, align systems, and build cultures that enable sustainable progress.

Leading Change Across Systems and Contexts

Dr. Simpson’s work has taken her across diverse educational environments, where she has led initiatives in areas such as accreditation, inspection readiness, curriculum development, wellbeing, and community engagement.

Rather than focusing solely on short-term outcomes, her approach centres on long-term impact, supporting schools to build internal capacity so that improvement can be sustained beyond immediate interventions. This systems-oriented perspective has become a defining element of her leadership, allowing her to guide organisations through complexity while maintaining a clear sense of direction and purpose.

Strengthening Leadership Through Doctoral Study

Alongside her professional experience, Dr. Simpson pursued a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) at European International University (EIUโ€“Paris), an experience that further strengthened her leadership perspective and academic foundation.

Reflecting on this journey, she shares:

Beyond the qualification itself, the experience fostered a deeper level of self-awareness and encouraged a more reflective, evidence-informed approach to leadership. Engaging with research, structured analysis, and data-driven thinking enabled her to better understand her own leadership strengths while refining how she responds to complex challenges in educational settings.

It also reinforced a core belief that continues to guide her work today: that sustainable school improvement depends on intentionally developing people, aligning systems with purpose, and cultivating cultures that support continuous growth.

From Practice to Thought Leadership
This philosophy now extends beyond her leadership practice into her broader contributions to the field. Her upcoming book, Built for Capacity, explores how schools can develop the people, systems, and culture required for long-term, meaningful improvement. Drawing on her experience in education leadership, the work reflects a commitment to supporting educators in moving beyond short-term solutions toward more sustainable, system-wide approaches.
