Choosing to Continue Despite Challenges
Pursuing higher education became far more than an academic goal for Ms. Siguenda Piemoe-Adams from Suriname. It became a personal journey shaped by resilience, determination, and the decision to continue moving forward despite significant challenges.
As a Certified Vocational Educator and CBET Assessor, her professional work has long been connected to teaching, skills development, and learner support. In 2023, she was accepted into the Master of Science in Innovative Education and Teaching (M.S.I.E.T.) programme at European International University (EIU–Paris), ready to begin a new phase in her academic and professional development.
However, shortly before beginning the programme, serious health complications changed the course of her plans. Following surgery and ongoing medical treatment, she was unable to start her studies as originally intended. In August 2024, she made the decision to try again despite continuing health challenges..
Learning Through Difficult Circumstances
During her studies, Ms. Piemoe-Adams spent extended periods in hospitals both in Suriname and abroad while managing a rare illness that affected her daily life.
Despite these circumstances, she remained committed to continuing her studies whenever she had the strength to do so. At times, this meant studying from a hospital bed. At other times, it meant continuing coursework late at night while navigating pain, exhaustion, and uncertainty.
Throughout the experience, she maintained the belief that even small progress still mattered.
Within nine months, she successfully graduated from the M.S.I.E.T. programme. For her, the achievement represented more than academic success alone. It became a reflection of perseverance, discipline, and determination during one of the most difficult periods of her life.
Strengthening Confidence Through Education
Reflecting on her experience at EIU–Paris, Ms. Piemoe-Adams shares:
“EIU-Paris helped me grow as an educator by giving me modern tools, new knowledge, and confidence in my abilities. The program supported me during my difficult health journey and helped me stay focused on my goals. Because of EIU, I became stronger, more skilled, and ready to inspire others in my field.”
Alongside academic development, the experience strengthened her confidence as both an educator and professional. It also reinforced the importance of persistence, patience, and maintaining a positive mindset through uncertainty.
The journey further deepened her commitment to supporting learners and continuing to grow within the field of vocational education and quality assurance.
A Perspective Rooted in Patience and Hope
Reflecting on her journey, Ms. Piemoe-Adams often compares herself to a farmer.
A farmer plants seeds with hope even when conditions remain uncertain. Some seasons are difficult, some harvests take time, yet the work continues with patience, consistency, and belief in future growth.
This perspective became an important source of strength throughout both her studies and personal challenges. Rather than allowing adversity to define her circumstances, she chose to continue focusing on growth, resilience, and the belief that better days remained ahead.
Today, she proudly stands as a graduate of the Master of Science in Innovative Education and Teaching programme while continuing to contribute to the field of vocational education and quality assurance.
Her journey reflects how education, perseverance, and hope can continue to create opportunities for growth even during life’s most challenging moments.
