Where Industry and Research Meet

For Ashwin Murali Nair, research has never been about pursuing a qualification alone. It has always been driven by a genuine curiosity about how advanced materials can be engineered to solve practical challenges and contribute to the technologies of tomorrow.

As Project Assistant in the Electronic Packaging Division at C-MET (Centre for Materials for Electronics Technology), Pune, Mr. Nair works at the intersection of materials science and electronics manufacturing, contributing to the development of advanced ceramic materials, electronic packaging technologies, and high-performance material systems. Working within a government research and development environment has provided him with first-hand experience of how scientific research is translated into technologies that must meet rigorous quality, reliability, and commercial standards.

While this industrial experience provided a valuable practical foundation, Mr. Nair believed that meaningful growth in materials science comes from combining hands-on fabrication with structured academic research. This conviction led him to pursue the Master of Science by Research (M.Sc. Research) in Physics (Materials Science) at European International University.

Research with Purpose

Mr. Nair’s decision to pursue research grew from a genuine curiosity about how advanced materials could be developed to address real-world challenges in electronics, next-generation technologies, and sustainable energy applications, including green hydrogen.

Alongside his responsibilities at C-MET, Mr. Nair contributed to the development and testing of advanced materials used in electronic technologies, while also participating in a technology transfer project that helped move laboratory research towards practical industrial application. Balancing full-time laboratory work, teaching, and academic research required discipline, consistency, and careful time management, with many evenings devoted to literature review, data analysis, manuscript preparation, and continual professional development.

Reflecting on this period, Mr. Nair believes meaningful research is built through sustained effort, patience, and a willingness to keep learning. More importantly, it reinforced his belief that scientific research creates the greatest impact when it can be translated into practical solutions that benefit industry and society.

Connecting Research with Real-World Application

Reflecting on his experience at EIUโ€“Paris, Mr. Nair shares:

“What I valued most at EIUโ€“Paris was the emphasis on connecting research with real-world application. The experience complemented my industrial background, strengthening my analytical thinking, technical writing, and ability to communicate complex materials science concepts clearly.”

The M.Sc. Research pathway encouraged independent thinking through research methodology, proposal development, conference seminars, an open defence viva, and a final thesis. More importantly, it enabled Mr. Nair to integrate practical industrial experience with structured academic research, allowing each to strengthen the other.

Throughout his research journey, Mr. Nair also received guidance from LIPS Research, the Advanced Research and Development (R&D) wing of European International University (EIUโ€“Paris). Together with the support of his academic supervisor and industry mentors, the structured research environment reinforced the importance of rigorous methodology, application-oriented research, and continual academic development.

Looking Ahead

Although completing the M.Sc. Research represents an important academic milestone, Mr. Nair views it as the foundation for the next stage of his professional journey rather than its destination.

He hopes to continue contributing to research in advanced materials, sensors, flexible electronics, and green hydrogen technologies through future doctoral study and international collaboration. His ambition remains firmly rooted in bridging fundamental science with practical innovation, developing research that not only advances knowledge but also contributes meaningful solutions to real-world challenges.

His journey demonstrates that impactful research is strengthened when scientific curiosity is combined with practical experience. By connecting industry and academia, researchers are better equipped to transform ideas into technologies that create lasting value for society.
