Growing up in Sri Lanka, I always had a curiosity about technology and how things worked. From a young age, I was fascinated by computers and the way they could solve complex problems, which sparked my interest in pursuing a career in IT. After completing my studies, I started my career as an IT Help Desk Engineer, where I was responsible for resolving technical issues for users. It was a challenging role that taught me the importance of patience, problem-solving, and clear communication. My time as a Senior System Engineer further enhanced my skills in managing complex IT systems and troubleshooting under pressure.
I pursued my IT & Data Science degree at the European International University in Paris, where I expanded my knowledge in data analysis and system management. The combination of theory and hands-on experience during my studies gave me the confidence to tackle more advanced challenges in the IT world.
With my experience in IT, I realized my true passion was in analyzing data to uncover insights that drive business decisions. This led me to take on the role of Data Analyst at NDB Bank, Sri Lanka. Here, I have been able to combine my technical skills with my interest in data science to help the bank make informed, data-driven decisions. Like many in the tech industry, I faced obstacles such as staying updated with rapid technological changes and managing complex systems. However, my perseverance and eagerness to learn helped me navigate through these challenges, whether it was through additional training or hands-on problem-solving.
Grateful for my Bachelor’s in IT and Data Science from EIU-Paris, a key step in my career.

Today, I am motivated by the potential of data to transform industries and solve real-world problems. I look forward to continuing my journey in data analysis, always striving to learn more and help organizations leverage the power of data to achieve their goals.
Every Piece of Data Tells a Story
In my journey as a Data Analyst, I’ve come to appreciate a fundamental truth: every piece of data tells a story; the challenge is listening. This quote, often shared within the data community, speaks to the very essence of what we do. It’s not just about crunching numbers; it’s about understanding the narrative behind them.
Data, in its rawest form, can seem like an endless stream of figures and facts. However, within those seemingly disparate points lies a wealth of information waiting to be discovered. It could be a pattern in customer behavior, a trend in market fluctuations, or an insight into operational inefficiencies. As analysts, we are the interpreters, tasked with transforming this raw data into coherent and meaningful stories.
This process of “listening” to data requires a unique blend of technical expertise and creative thinking. It involves:
- Data Collection and Cleaning: Gathering data from various sources and ensuring its accuracy and consistency.
- Exploratory Data Analysis: Diving deep into the data to identify patterns, trends, and anomalies.
- Visualization: Presenting the data in a clear and compelling format that tells a story.
- Communication: Effectively conveying the insights to decision-makers in a way that is both informative and persuasive.
Throughout his career, Shavinda has navigated challenges such as staying updated with rapidly evolving technologies and managing intricate systems. His perseverance and eagerness to learn have been key to overcoming these obstacles. Motivated by the transformative power of data, Shavinda continues to grow in his field and is excited about the future opportunities in data analysis.
